Hundreds Attend Memorial for Man Killed in Drive-By Shooting

The public event held at Groman Mortuaries attracted family, friends and co-workers.

Hundreds crowded the viewing Tuesday night for Juan Jose Barajas ,

They filled the 200-capacity Groman Mortuaries chapel and pushed out the door on to the street, remembering their friend and co-worker.

Barajas’s four children, his wife and parents as well as many in the huge extended family were on hand.

So were neighbors and many who saw Barajas every day in his job as cashier at the Farmer’s Insurance cafeteria.

Father, Mother Last to See Body

Barajas’s mother, father and cousin were the last to see the body before the coffin was closed just after 9 p.m.

The immediate family left late Tuesday night on a flight for Guadalajara, and then on to Cojumatlan where the body will be buried either Friday or Saturday.

See the Barajas Family Fund website here.

Barajas leaves behind four children—Fatima, 17; Juan Jose III, 14; Natalie, 5, and Hailey, 2.

Police have been investigating the drive-by shooting, but with little luck.

Detective Chris Linscomb told Echo Park Patch Tuesday that they "have some leads left to pursue but nothing more than what we had initially."

A shooter in a gold or gray sedan may have committed the crime, firing as Barajas sat with a neighbor on the stoop of his apartment building.

Police believe the crime is gang related, though Barajas, a naturalized citizen, was not a gang member.
