Hiker Carried Out of Griffith Park Tuesday Morning

He was taken to Hollywood Presbyterian hospital and treated for minor injuries.

A hiker rescued Tuesday morning from a Griffith Park trailhead was expected to be released later that day from Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, according to a hospital spokesperson. Medics took him there after he was carried out from where he fell, near Dante’s View, a point familiar to many hikers overlooking downtown.

A  Los Angeles Fire Department helicopter lowered medics down to the man after he was discovered lying on the trail just after 7 a.m. According to Deborah Ettinger at the Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital,  the man tripped over a stump and was lying on the ground when several other hikers discovered him. They were concerned that he may have fallen from a cliff or nearby tree and called for assistance.

“It was a minor injury,” said Ettinger. “But he had a history of other injuries, so they thought it best to bring him in.”

Griffith Park hikers familiar with the area know that the walk up to Dante’s View can be quite steep and slippery this time of season.

Brian Humphreys of the Los Angeles Fire Department incidents like this one "routine" especially in the springtime.

He said hikers get up on Griffith Park's more remote trails and overestimate what they can do.

He added that some spring weekends you'll see several reported a day the department's Twitter feed @LAFD.

Humphreys said 71 such incidents in the last 12 months used helicopter transport.
