After Crash, CD 13 Office To Explore Concrete Barrier for Pizza Buona Corner

A vehicle spun out of control and crashed through the restaurant's window, injuring a pedestrian there Tuesday. Julie Wong of CD13 says the office was not aware of previous efforts to have a barrier installed at the corner.

Echo Park was shocked Tuesday when a car spun out of control and crashed into the legendary Pizza Buona storefront.

The car took a pedestrian a long with it, pushing a pregnant woman 20 feet into the restaurant space.

Israel Palacios, son of the restaurant's owner, told Echo Park Patch that the restaurant had experienced a similar event two decades ago.

Palacios said that at that time a request to have a concrete barrier installed at the corner was turned down.

Palacios said again Tuesday that a barrier might have helped prevent the latest incident and asked city officials to again explore that option.

Julie Wong in the Council District 13 office says they are not aware of a previous attempt to install a barrier, though, she said, it would have pre-dated Eric Garcetti's term.

Wong also told us this:

We are currently working with the relevant city departments to explore options for that corner.  Of course, we would need to also consider factors such as compliance with ADA laws.

She says efforts would begin at the city's Department of Transportation.
