LAFD Battles House Fire Near Echo Park Lake

The fire consumes a two-story Craftsman, leaving a resident and two firefighters injured early Wednesday morning.

Firefighters fought a blaze in a wooden home on North Bonnie Brae Street in Echo Park early Wednesday morning.

It took 52 firefighters about 45 minutes to knock down the fire in the two-story Craftsman home at 911 N. Bonnie Brae St., according to incident Commander Randy Beaty at the scene.  The blaze was reported just after midnight, he said. A resident of the house was taken to the hospital after jumping out of the building, according to Beatty and several bystanders we talked to.

Two firefighters were also taken to a hospital for what Beatty called minor injuries.

Joshua Alas, who lives next door to the house, said he woke up to see a cloud of smoke coming through his kitchen.

"I saw the embers and I heard the embers bursting all over. And I heard a bunch of guys screaming 'Help,'" he said.

Alas said when he went outside he saw a man covered in soot come to one of the windows of the home.

"He jumped, and as soon as he did, the firefighters came," said Alas.

Beatty said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
