Echo Park - Silver Lake Crime: Vehicle Thefts and Break-ins Remain High

Our colleague over at the Eastsider LA reminded us earlier today that burglaries remain an issue in Echo Park – Silver Lake this week, with five burglaries in the Echo Park area again this week.

What also caught our eye in looking over the Crimemapping.com data for the last few days was the high number of vehicle related crimes going on.

Just between June 6 and June 11, there were 7 car break-ins in the area. During the same time period 5 cars were stolen.

Officer Horacio Lopez of Rampart says the car thieves are targeting 1990s Hondas and Acura Integras.

“The theft suspects are targeting these vehicles and removing the vehicles ECUs (electronic control units),” he told us in an email.

Lopez says these are particularly easy to remove.

Break-ins and stolen cars remain an issue for our area, in part because of the easy freeway access.
