Echo Park Native Star of National Bishops' Conference

J. Jon Bruno, head of the Los Angeles diocese, talked about his recovery from cancer via telephone.

Echo Park residents have followed with concern the case of J. Jon Bruno.

The 65-year-old head of the six-county Los Angeles dicoese of the Episcopal church, was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent aggressive treatment earlier this year.

The bishop updated his colleagues last week via telephone.

“We’ve gone from what one doctor said was a hopeless case to a complete remission,” he told the bishops, according to the Los Angeles Times. 

“I’ve been cleared of leukemia,” he added, saying he was "coming back with vigor."

Bruno grew up in Echo Park and is still based at the diocese cathedral in Echo Park.

Just before making his illness public,

He is known for pushing the Episcopal church in a liberal direction, and was an early opponent of Prop 8.

This week his colleagues at the Bishops' convention are considering creating a liturgy for gay marriage.

The Episcopal Church would be the first denomination to do so.
