101-Year-Old Echo Park Man Found

Lazaro Alfonso Gomez checked himself into a Glendale Memorial Hospital. He was found there Sunday evening.

A 101-year-old Echo Park man who had been reported missing was at a Glendale hospital Sunday, having checked himself in after falling while on his way to visit a woman who was not expecting him, police said.

Lazaro Alfonso Gamez lives alone in the 4300 block of Willowbrook Avenue and, according to a Los Angeles Police Department statement issued Saturday, ``suffers from dementia and is in poor mental condition.''

He was reported missing Saturday night by a caregiver who had not heard from him since Wednesday morning.

An officer working the telephones in a search for Gamez located him at Glendale Memorial hospital around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.

``He rode the bus to visit his friend in Glendale Friday,'' said Sgt. Melvin Gamble of the LAPD's Rampart Station. ``When he got off the bus near her residence, he fell, bruising his right eye, and admitted himself to Glendale Memorial.''

The friend had not been expecting him, Gamble said, adding that Gamez remained at Glendale Memorial this morning for observation.
