The men and women of the Hostess Brands Bakery in Atwater Village have joined with thousands of other bakery workers across the nation to take a stand to protect their jobs.
In Atwater Village, the members of the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers Local 37 have been honoring a nationwide strike since this last Sunday.
They are figthing the coroprate leaders of Hostess Brands Inc., the makers of populars snacks, such as, Twinkies, Cup Cakes, and Wonder Bread to protect their wages, healthcare benefits and retirement security.
Hostess Brands Inc. has filed for bankruptcy and is threatening to lay off more that 18,500 workers if members of Local 37 do not submit to concessions they are demanding which will furhter reduce their hourly wages, increase the cost of their healthcare benefits and threaten their retirement benefits.
While workers have given concessions to the company over the years in regards to wages and healthcare benefits, the CEO have been given raises in excess of 300 percent.
It is unfair and just plain wrong for a national coropration like Hostess Brands to pull the rug out from their workers who have given 10, 15 and 20 years of service to the company.
Hostess Brands would rather layoff thousands of employees and jeopardize the livelihood of hundreds of families that work to find a solution. Six weeks before Christmas is not the time to play with the job security of loyal workers.
