Recycle Your Christmas Tree

The Los Angeles Department of Sanitation has ways for you to dispose of your tree in an environmentally friendly manner.

Now that the holidays have passed, it's time to take down the decorations. That may include your freshly cut Christmas tree, which is at this point shedding needles and ready to go.

But don't just dump that tree in the trash. You can dispose of it in your regular green bin, from where it will be mulched.

The city's Department of Sanitation offers the following directions on their web site:

  1. REMOVE all ornaments, decorations, tinsels, and stand from the tree
  2. CUT tree in pieces to fit into the green bin, and
  3. PLACE the tree pieces inside the green bin for regular pick-up on collection day. Collected Christmas trees will be recycled into compost and mulch.

For residents of larger apartment buildings or those with overly large trees, don't despair. Place your tree next to the bins on trash day and it will be picked up.

Also, the Fire Department and Parks and Recreation Department are accepting trees at some locations on January 8, 2012.
