Silver Lake Streets: Rowena's Road Diet Begins With New Bike Lines

The much-debated traffic-calming measure is now in place, with a 90-day preview plan.

Pedestrians and cyclists have much to cheer about in Silver Lake. 

Two bike lanes--one in each direction--have been added along Rowena Avenue between Glendale Boulevard and Hyperion Avenue.

Tom LaBonge and some locals road-tested those lanes Friday morning, soon after they were painted in.

The bike lanes come as part of the long-awaited "Rowena Road Diet," a traffic-calming measure debated at a number of community meetings over the last year and a half.

Two lanes of traffic have also been removed from the stretch between Glendale Boulevard and Hyperion Avenue.

Construction related to a new water pipe had troubled commuters and residents for a long time.

It had also sparked a conversation about what the road might look like when it was back in top form.

According to Tom LaBonge's office, the current configuration of the road diet will be tested to see if any changes are needed.
