Pazzo Gelato Tempts with New Location

Silver Lake gelato spot heads east with a new outpost on the ground floor of Echo Park's Citibank building.

Pazzo Gelato, a favorite spot in Silver Lake for gelato treats, baked snacks and espresso has opened an east side outpost in the heart of Echo Park. Taking over the ground floor space of a former cafe at the Citibank Building, 1910 W Sunset Blvd., soft-opened last Wednesday and plans to be a tad bigger and a little different from its Silver Lake sister while still offering the same carefully chosen and high quality products hand-picked by owner Mike Buch.

Okay Isn't Enough

"I don't want to offer something that's just okay," Buch said about his products, noting that he prefers local and organic items when possible. Buch explained that the new Pazzo Gelato would be adding items slowly, building with quality while adjusting to the needs and tendencies of the new neighborhood, including the hundred plus office workers who spend all day in the space above his shop.

"I want to be one of those places where anything we're selling is going to be good," Buch said. He plans to slowly introduce baked goods, paninis, bagels, and a selection of grad-and-go items perfect for lunch. And of course, the gelato and espresso that is the signature of the Silver Lake shop.

Pazzo Gelato Was a Year in Coming

Buch began checking out the Echo Park location over a year ago but hesitated until offered a great deal by the building's owner. The space is larger and more modern in feel, yet still comfortable, than Silver Lake store. Free WiFi, rows of tables along big windows, and hanging lamps with a chromatic color scheme make the interior both welcoming and cool. The outdoor patio is spacious and set back from the street, offering space and a bit of quiet while still affording good people watching.

Glad to be part of the neighborhood, Buch noted the "different vibe" of the Echo Park location despite being just two miles from the original Pazzo Gelato.

Pazzo Gelato Wants to Be a Part of the Community

Buch hopes the comraderie between existing establishments and new ventures would continue and that Pazzo Gelato would become a place people stop in to enjoy a treat before and after dining or visiting nearby eateries and clubs.

"Maybe people can come have a gelato after a dinner at Taix or after a show at the Echo," Buch said.

Buch expressed excitment over moving into a vibrant, creative neighborhood where long-time businesses work side-by-side with newer establishments. The energy of the neighborhood was a draw.

"There are so many cool businesses and restaurants in Echo Park," Buch said.

Pazzo Gelato is certainly working to be one of them.
