MOMS Club of Silver Lake Aims to Give Back

The organization stresses the importance of donating to charities.

The MOMS Club of Silver Lake is on a mission to not just help other mothers in Silver Lake and Echo Park but to also make a difference in the lives of families all over Los Angeles.

The more than 100 mothers who are members of the MOMS Club, which stands for Moms offering Moms support, hold events throughout the year to raise money for charities.

“I think being a new parent is a moment in time when you realize how important your community is,” said Emily Newman, president of the MOMS Club of Silver Lake.

The club donated approximately $4,000 to charities last year, including to the Alliance for Children’s Rights and Heart of Los Angeles. Newman said they expect to raise around the same amount of money this year. The goal is to continue some projects, including giving donations of pajamas and blankets to the Union Rescue Mission on Skid Row to help families in crisis. The group also made a donation earlier this year to the families in Newtown, Connecticut, according to Newman.

Rummage sales, raffles and an annual Preschool Forum, usually held in the fall, are significant fundraisers for the organization.

While giving back is of the utmost importance, Newman said the reason that she and many others initially joined the group was because they themselves needed support from other mothers.

“Being a parent is the most joyful thing I’ve ever done, but it’s also not easy,” said Newman who has two toddlers. "It's not always easy to find parents of other young children."

The MOMS Club of Silver Lake will be holding events later this summer and throughout the year. To find out more about the organization, or to apply to become a member, send an email to silverlakemoms@gmail.com.
