LAPD Rampart Division Captain Relieved of Duty after DUI Arrest

Captain Steve Ruiz has been reassigned to a "non-field assignment."

A veteran Los Angeles Police Department captain has been relieved of duty as head of the Rampart Station while an investigation is conducted into his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving, authorities said today.

LAPD Capt. Steve Ruiz was reassigned to a "non-field assignment'' pending the outcome of the criminal case and an internal police investigation, said LAPD Officer Susan Torres of the Media Relations office.

Other details of the case involving the 25-year police veteran were not being released at this time, Torres said.

California Highway Patrol Officer Saul Gomez told the Los Angeles Times that Ruiz was arrested by a CHP officer on suspicion of drunken driving about 1:30 a.m. May 30 near the Ventura (101) Freeway at Woodman Avenue in Sherman Oaks.

Gomez declined to release details that led to the traffic stop, or the results of a field sobriety test and breathalyzer test that were administered to Ruiz.
