Eastside Bike Mecca Targets Silver Lake Location

The Bicycle Kitchen wants to buy a building near Fountain Avenue and Virgil Street.

Just west of Los Angeles City College you find the Bicycle Kitchen.

On a corner on Melrose Avenue, the nonprofit Kitchen has helped people maintain their own bikes for a decade, becoming a cornerstone of our city's booming bike culture in the process.

The Kitchen rents now. Managers have decided they'll try to buy a space, located near the intersection of Virgil Street and Fountain Avenue in Silver Lake.

As bike activist Roadblock points out on the blog of the Wolfpack Hustle, the elite riders group he runs:

The Bicycle Kitchen has been the hub of bicycle culture in Los Angeles for years now. And for years, they’ve been stuffed into a cramped space making it happen for thousands and thousands and thousands of people every week at Heliotrope and Melrose...This is especially exciting news considering the location they intend to buy is less than a block from the other center of the Los Angeles bicycle universe… TANGS!

Tang's is Tang's Donuts at Sunset and Hyperion, where the Wolfpack Hustle riders meet for their late evening distance rides on Mondays.

Hustle riders are best-known for racing a Jet Blue plane last fall and winning.
