As the season of giving is upon us, we'd like to celebrate the efforts of the students in our programs. These young people are putting Wildwoods' community building philosophy into action by giving back to make their community and their world a better place.
Challenged by Wildwoods program instructors to follow Gandhi’s motivation to “be the change,” each class that participates in our Full Circle program concludes their experience by developing a community service project based on the needs that they see in the world around them.
The fifth grade students in our Full Circle program at Mayberry Elementary School in Echo Park are conducting a food drive to benefit the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Non-perishable canned food or dry goods can be dropped off at the school until Wednesday December 12. There is a drop-off box in the main office at 2414 Mayberry St., Los Angeles 90026.
Also in Echo Park, at Clifford Elementary, the students in Ms. Tountas' 5th grade class are conducting a food and clothing drive for the Good Shepherd Center for homeless women and children. You can download a detailed wish list here. Donations can be dropped off at the school -located at 2150 Duane St., Los Angeles 90039- until Thursday, December 13.
Finally, the students at Venice High School in our Oakgrove program (which just celebrated its 40th anniversary) are celebrating this momentous milestone by launching an after-school tutoring project for elementary students in the community. The program kicks off in January at Walgrove Elementary.
Our students learn the benefits of working together. They learn the power of their voices. They learn that each of them can make a difference.

I live just down the street from their The Village Kitchen, and I suggest people check that worthy project out as well. http://gschomeless.org/joomla/index.php/the-village-kitchen.html It's nice to be reminded that not all 501c3's are part of the Nonprofit Industrial Complex, and that there still are a few that aren't trying to drive public policy on behalf of their corporate and billionaire funders.
