It’s a sad result of the current economic climate, but just about every few weeks we seem to report here at Patch about another longtime neighborhood shop or restaurant closing down.

Joshua Jordison also lost a favorite neighborhood shop, but he decided to try and do something about it in a big way, so he started Threadcrawl, a seven-day shopping event taking place all over the greater Los Angeles area that will offer customers a chance for discounts at selected clothing stores, including some in Echo Park and Silver Lake.

“I’m a Los Angeles native and last year there was a particular clothing store that I enjoyed that went bankrupt and out of business,” said Jordison. “I was there just two weeks before and then I went back and it was gone, the sign was gone, everything.”

Echo Park and Silver Lake have seven locations participating, including Bear Cat, Bucks and Does and Ragg Mopp Vintage. Click here for a listing of all the local shops participating.

Threadcrawl is from Aug. 19 to Aug. 25 and $2 from the $17 ticket will go toward City of Hope, a cancer research and treatment hospital. Ticket holders will be offered discounts at numerous stores all over the county, including Agoura Hills, Beverly Hills, Calabasas, Century City, Eagle Rock, Los Feliz, Hollywood, Malibu, Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica, Studio City and Tarzana. Tickets can be bought at Threadcrawl.com.

Jordison said Threadcrawl gives local businesses a chance to bring in new customers. Stores are offering an average of a 20 percent discount, but according to Jordison, some stores might offer exclusive discounts up to 70 pecent off.

There are 135 store locations that will be participating in Threadcrawl. A few are national chains like Juicy Couture but the majority are local clothing stores. Threadcrawl will also offer discounts to some Los Angeles events. Though the details are still not confirmed, the events include pop-up shops and galleries.

Silver Lake’s Bucks and Does, a bohemian inspired clothing store for both men and women, is one of the stores participating in Threadcrawl. Owner Laura O’Dell said that she is excited to see where Threadcrawl will go and how many people will participate.

“Since we're a new store I'd love to gain new customers and an awareness about our shop as a local Silver Lake destination for women's and men's clothes,” O'Dell said.
