The Left Bank Is the Right Place for a Stop on Bike to Work Day

Jacqueline Goodman doesn't usually open her shop, the Left Bank on Thursdays. But it's Bike to Work Day in Los Angeles County, and her store is open--for good reason.

The Left Bank was invited to be one of the many pit stops set up around Los Angeles County to assist bikers in their commutes.

Goodman has set up a table with fruits, fluids and route maps outside the shop on Fletcher Drive, as many other small business owners have been invited to do this day.

Goodman tells us that about a dozen bikers have stopped for sustenance, though she's seen about 50 go by.

Just a few doors from the Los Angeles River, the store was asked to participate in the event by the Friends of the Los Angeles River, one of the nonprofits that some of the shop's proceeds are routinely donated to, Goodman says.

Goodman opened the vintage clothing and accessories store in December in the space at 2479 Fletcher Drive occupied for decades by her husband's family business, Ace Fasteners. It features artist-made and gently used clothing, housesware and collectibles, spread across three rooms.

Goodman's two daughters help out, staffing The Left Bank Fridays and Saturdays.  Goodman and her husband take over on Sundays.  Goodman also has a full-time job in education, which keeps her busy on weekdays.

Goodman says the couple briefly tried to lease out the space, but decided having their own store in the space made the most sense.

Goodman's daughter came up with the name, The Left Bank, she says, a nod to the river's proximity and a tall tower in back of the shop that looks a little like Paris' Eiffel Tower.

Goodman says it's an exciting time to be in the area, just a few doors away from Rattlesnake Park on the Los Angeles River, where guided tours will be launching most weekend days through the summer.

The Left Bank is located at 2479 Fletcher Drive.
