Sib Song: Worthy New Neighborhood Thai

Echo Park has Thai food, but this new restaurant could be the best around.

There has long been a nondescript Thai restaurant in the 7-11 strip mall at Sunset and Rosemont, its bright red sign not really doing much to attract attention. Funnily enough, it's the more subdued logo of restaurant, the new establishment in the old O-Thai space, that's drawing Echo Park eyes.

There are a few Thai restaurants in Echo Park, generally of the "good enough for delivery" variety. Sib Song is a step above that: good enough to put on some fancy pants (you know, the kind with a button) and head out for an evening.

The decor is understated, but the little flourishes here and there are pretty cute, with chalkboard drawings of stylized animals along one wall, underneath an incongruous chandelier that's probably left over from the previous tenant. Nothing fancy, but comfortable and filled with the full Echo Park representation: large families to young couples.

The menu covers all the basics, the noodle dishes and stir-fries to which we spoiled Angelenos have become accustomed. The offerings aren't always perfection - the pad see ew could have more of the flavorful char that sets it apart from from other noodle dishes - but Sib Song also dares to take on iconic dishes from other, established restaurants like Ruen Pair in Hollywood. Sib Song's greens with crispy pork isn't as deeply soulful as Ruen Pair's famous version, but the chunks of pork are hearty and the greens cooked perfectly, still crunchy and bright green.

The service is pretty cute, offering preemptively to serve the spicy seafood soup with the spice on the side. (Hey, they were right! It was great without it.) Delivery won't be available for about a month, but this little neighborhood gem is worth checking out in person.
