Pop Up Beergarden Comes to Los Feliz This Weekend

It will be housed at a new a "creative marketplace" at a 1956 service station augmented by storage containers called "The Riverside Service Station."

When it comes to outdoor bars, this city provides surprisingly few options aside from the occasional dingy smoker patio. Austen Lee and Evan Roosevelt aim to change that with their latest venture, Beergarden L.A.

“Some of our best afternoons are spent outside in our friend’s backyard. We want to bring that casual outdoor, bar atmosphere to L.A and the Service Station is the best place for it,” said Roosevelt.

The [Riverside] Service Station they’re referring to, built in 1956, is a relic from Los Angeles’s peak period of car culture. Augmented by some storage containers, the site near the L.A. River plans to house a rolling assortment of new businesses--and older businesses looking for new life.

It is already taking shape, with many spaces rented and the arrival of Beergarden L.A. is a sign of that.

This revitalization of an historical landmark is a growing trend in the city’s historic neighborhoods, including Downtown L.A. and Highland Park.

Lee and Roosevelt, both Los Angeles natives, have always been interested in the city’s public parks and can be found most weekends playing golf at the Los Feliz 3-Par Course.

“So much of what makes LA unique are these outdoor spaces to enjoy the incredible weather - so why not shift our focus from all of these dark, indoor bars to something more airy and social?” said Roosevelt.

Beergarden L.A. will have a permanent home at the Service Station once the weather warms up in Spring of 2013. Meantime, they're planning a few pop-up events, including one this weekend.

The event will feature food trucks, including Border Grill, alongside Beergarden LA’s offerings of beer and cider. There will also be an opportunity to buy last minute Christmas trees at the adjacent lot, and enjoy the event’s crowning achievement, bringing real snow to the event.

“The snow was a particular challenge, but we should have some good coverage this weekend,” says Lee. With 300+ days of good weather a year and an amazing outdoor property, Beergarden LA is one to watch out for.
