Echo Park's Newest Restaurant Could Open by Monday

Tony Yanow's long-awaited restaurant Mohawk Bend is just days away from opening.

We've written a lot in Echo Park Patch about the bar and restaurant that's coming to the hundred-year-old space on Sunset Boulevard near Mohawk.

Tony Yanow, of Tony's Darts Away in Burbank and the soon-to-open Golden Road Brewing in Atwater, has worked hard and long to bring Mohawk Bend to us.

He's dealt with broken sewer lines and power lines as well as a collective memory that can no longer remember the former vaudeville theater as inhabited--or inhabitable.

Well, Yanow's efforts have paid off. Mohawk Bend in Echo Park is something to behold.

72 Beers on Tap

Local food press got a preview Tuesday night of what to expect: 72 microbrewed beers on tap, 65 of them from California, most of them vegan.

(We got a chance to sample just five, but the idea of that many is pretty impressive and certainly goes right to Yanow's expertise.)

Mohawk Bend will also be mixing "high-end cocktails," all of them using liquors distilled in California.

Check out the accompanying gallery to see a timelapse/stop action breakdown of bartender Erica Englund mixing a "vanilla bean daiquiri." She's using Mohawk Bend's special vanilla bean syrup and a rum distilled in California by Charbay.

Vegan Fare Too

The menu seems to be taking shape too, though some of the critics on hand were a bit skeptical.

We tasted a margherita pizza, a mushroom pizza, succulent and commendable steamed mussels and a steam artichoke with a tasty and tangy dip.

According to the management, the food menu will be 60 percent vegan.

Remaking The Ramona Theater

Finallly, the space itself is enough to make us dub Tony Yanow a local hero.

The dusty and uneven shell that was the Ramona space's innards has been pulled back to its brick walls. It's raw, but it's cozy.

The dining room--or "Ramona Room"--once the theater's screening area and orchestra pit--is particularly striking and homey.

An area out front that once housed the homeless is now a comfortable cocktail area overlooking Lucy's .

Look for that to be packed the day this place opens.

And the main room and bar area is two stories high and has a comfortable open feel too.

The projection booth above has been converted to a stage area where live music will be presented.

Mohawk Bend Could Open by Monday

Yanow's being very cagey about the official opening date. The LA Weekly says July 25, but a kitchen worker I asked said "about two weeks."

I hope there will be some sort of official ribbon-cutting to acknowledge this new and certainly important player in the Echo Park economy.

This is a destination restaurant that will be bringing folks in from all over the city.

We'll be keeping an eye out.
