Lunch Steals: Delilah, Park, Xoia

News, notes, specials and steals keep you in the loop on the area's restaurant and nightlife scene.

Times are tight, taxes are due and splurging on a sit-down lunch during the week may seem extravagant. It doesn’t have to be. Echo Park restaurants offer up plenty of dining deals, but weekday lunch specials often get overlooked. Here are three of our favorites that may not be on your radar—all for under ten bucks.

Offered on weekdays, ’s Lunch Box Special offers a whole lot of goodness for $9.95. We’re talking about a sandwich, bag of chips and full-sized cupcake (as opposed to the adorable two-bite numbers always served with the sandwiches).

Choose from nine sandwiches, including the beloved BLTA with avocado, roasted veggie with hummus, and the adventurous PB & BJ, with peanut butter, caramelized bananas and blackberry jam. Salty, crunchy chips on the side up the ante, but the real deal here is the cupcake. Nothing says lunch like a chocolate orange Jack Daniels cupcake, or the classic red velvet. Yum.

The Park probably offers up more specials and deals than any other Echo Park restaurant, the most popular being Wednesday’s $5 Burger Night. Less celebrated is the weekday lunch special, served Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Nine sandwiches are just five bucks (including the burger), which includes all but a couple of $7 sandwiches and the splurge-worthy $8 brisket sandwich. That means five bucks will get you pulled pork barbecue, homemade meatballs, curry chicken, the popular veggie burger and a lot more. Most of these sandwiches cost double during weekend brunch (those that are even available). For a buck extra, you get a side of potato salad, pasta salad, coleslaw or a side salad.

You may already know about Xoia’s weekday lunch special, thanks to the chalkboard sidewalk display usually parked out front, but it’s worth mentioning again. From 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., you can get half a banh mi sandwich and a half bowl of any pho or curry soup for $6.99. Half may sound skimpy, but don’t be fooled—this is a whole lot of food for under ten bucks.

Eight creative banh mi options served on a fresh, crusty baguette include beef brisket made with pho au jus, lemongrass pork carnitas, tofu and mushroom, and curry chicken, which you get to dip in a side of curry soup, a la the classic French dip. Add to that a nice-sized bowl of steaming noodle soup and crispy shrimp chips, and you’ll be fortified for a good part of the day.

Just don’t forget your cash, or you’ll have to hit up Xoia's ATM.
