Independent Label Market Comes West in Silver Lake Schoolyard

Micheltorena Elementary School hosts the music industry confab, featuring booths staffed by more than two dozen leading indies Saturday.

Meet the founders and managers of leading independent record labels at the Micheltorena Elementary School this Saturday from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

They'll be part of the first Independent Label Market held on the West Coast.

They will offer releases and specialty wares in what organizers call "a unique brand of farmers market."

There will also be artists' appearances.

The worldwide event was launched in London in 2011. It has also been held in New York, but this is its first West Coast stop.

Organizers are downtown L.A. independent IAMSOUND.

Local labels include Dangerbird, Origami Vinyl and Stones Throw.

Micheltorena Elementary's schoolyard, located in the center of Silver Lake on Sunset Boulevard, looks to be the perfect venue.

The monthly Art Craft and Vintage Fair held there recently won "Best Independent Flea Market" from the L.A. Weekly.

As organizers noted on Facebook:

As the music industry embraces mp3s and a more digital strategy, Independent Label Market is proving to be an valuable reminder of how music retail can be a social affair [with]people hanging out together as a community and buying records.
