Echo to Host Series on Business Side of Music

Industry insiders will kick the series off next Saturday with a look at music publishing.

Late Friday I got some interesting news in my in-box, an email from senior talent buyer Liz Garo of .

It said music publisher BMI and The Echo/Echoplex/Spaceland Productions have partnered for a panel series on "the Dos-Don’ts-Maybes-Why Nots?" of the music business.

Nice.

Under the moniker, "Back to School," the monthly panels will take on a topic with the help of industry insiders.

Liz says the idea blossomed over the course of breaksfasts, drinks and conversation with BMI Executive Director of Writer-Publisher Relations Tracie Verlinde.

Next Saturday, Sept. 17, will hone in on music publishing. The goal's to answer questions like "How much do I give away?" and "How can I get the money?"

Panelists will include:

  • Amanda Berman-EMI Publishing
  • Jeff Pachman-Domino Publishing
  • Dan Coleman-A Side Music
  • Sarah Smith-Bank Robbers Music Placement
  • Gus Seyffert-artist/songwriter

Liz says "Q&A" will be emphasized" with the goal of having three take-home pointers.

The event runs 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Echo, 1822 Sunset Blvd., Echo Park, CA 90026.

Admission is free with RSVP, $5 without.

The panels are open to the public and all ages; early arrivals will get complementary slices of Two Boots Pizza.

Two more panels are planned:

  • Oct. 15--Booking and Touring (How in the Hell Do I Get A Show?)
  • Nov. 19--Digital Distribution/Media/Promotion (Blogs, Blogs, Blogs)
