5 Places To Work On Your Screenplay

Take your laptop, your notes and sit at one of Echo Park's cafes to work.

Where would Los Angeles be without the film industry? For more than 100 years, moviemaking has fueled the city’s growth and attracted transplants from across the country and around the world. Actors, directors, writers and more all flock to L.A. for a chance to make it in Hollywood. The cafes of the city are full of people on laptops, churning out the next great spec script. The Echo Park area offers plenty of places for you to sit and craft your screen opus as well.

Try the Downbeat Café (www.thedownbeatcafe.com/) at 1202 N. Alvarado Street. WiFi is available, except during prime lunch hours. Open your computer, munch on a brie & avocado melt ($8.50) and sip an iced tea ($1.80) as you hash out the second act of your script.

At work on a novel? Surround yourself with published works and sit at the café at (www.storiesla.com), located at 1716 Sunset Blvd. This book shop and café offers treats like a tuna sandwich with dill on toasted rye bread ($7.95) and a full range of coffee drinks. But buy something – WiFi is for customers only.

Set up at the and get the caffeine flowing. Enjoy the crepes, both sweet and savory, which are the highlight of the menu. Located at 2201 Sunset Blvd., The Coffee Pot offers free WiFi, a few outside tables with ashtrays and proximity to the fire station.

Try at 1559 Echo Park Ave. to get your caffeine fix, have a sandwich and sit outdoors with your faithful dog at your feet. Their vegan cheese sandwich ($7.50) could tempt even carnivores.

The last place to consider offers no coffee. It does have Internet access and you don’t have to worry about hogging a table. Consider writing your next original pilot at the library. The , at 2011 Sunset Blvd., is open Tuesday to Saturday and is free. You’ll have plenty of research materials at hand, and plenty of tables and electrical outlets.
