This Week in Live Music

Live music picks for the week in and around the Eastside.

Tuesday: Those looking to stay close to home, here in the neighborhood, at , one of my favorite new-ish local bands, The Allah-Las, continue their (free) month-long residency. Support this week includes Jeffertitti’s Nile, Shirley Rolls and The Aabigails.

Wednesday: As if one needed an excuse to celebrate the life and work of French auteur Serge Gainsbourg, this is the week to do it (more on that in a bit) kicking off with a screening of the film Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life at the Bootleg Theater. Film at 7:30 followed by a performance by Penelope Fortier. Bonus: it's free if you RSVP to GainsbourgRSVP@foldsilverlake.com; limit of four passes per response.

Down the road in Silver Lake, at The Satellite, Brooklyn indie rockers Obits take the stage along with Disappears and Beaters. Disappears latest LP, Guider, is one of my favorits of the year thus far.

JV's latest album, White Wilderness, marks yet another solid entry in the artists already impressive ourvre. In a unique collaboration, the album incorporates the sounds of the Bay Area's Magik*Magik Orchestra backing Vanderslice's compositions (see video).  Local singer-songwriter Patrick Park supports.

At The Satellite, DIY cult music legend R. Stevie Moore pays a visit to L.A. with the promise of "very special guests" -- which leads me to wonder if that includes fan/disciple Ariel Pink. We shall see.

Sunday: As mentioned earlier, this is truly L.A. week for fans of Serge Gainsbourg. If this is you, make your way over to the Hollywood Bowl Sunday night for the Serge Gainsbourg Tribute. Conductors Jean Claude Vannier and Scott Dunn will lead the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra through an array of Gainsbourg material aided by special guests Beck, Sean Lennon, Charlotte Kemp Muhl, Ed Droste (Grizzly Bear),Victoria Legrand (Beach House), Zola Jesus, Lulu Gainsbourg and more. Also, the Light In The Attic Records crew will be on site selling not only their Serge reissues but a special commemorative t-shirt you won't want miss.
