Oscar Weekend...Sans The Oscars. Live Music Edition.

Despite what the majority of the media would have you believe not everything in Los Angeles revolves around the Academy Awards this weekend. Promise. Below are some of our picks leading up to Sunday's event.

Sebadoh with special guests QUASI @ the Echoplex / Friday

Kick your weekend off right Friday night at as indie-rock demigods, Sebadoh, perform their classic 1994 LP, Bakesale, in its entirety. Have you been keen on all things "lo-fi" trending in indie-rock over the past couple of years? If so, come see the big boys do it right. Bonus: Seattle rocker's Quasi supoort...and are not to be missed.

Death / RTX / Sic Alps @ the Echoplex / Saturday

The first thing you should know is the "Death" in question here is not the metal band of the same name. The second is that if you count yourslf a fan of old school MC5/Stooges-eque punk rock, well, than this show is for you. Death is a group of early 70s proto-punkers from Detroit who the Chicago based Drag City label rescued from obscurity a couple years back with a reissue of the band's sole LP. The band reformed and now (occasionally) take their show on the road. Sic Alps (a personal favorite) and RTX support.

FUNKY SOLE @ the Echo / Saturday

No plans Saturday night? No worries, Funky Solo at the Echo has you covered. Possibly my favorite standing DJ night in LA, Funky Sole's resident DJs, Miles and Clifton, dig super-deep into their collective crates spinning only the rawest (and funkiest) soul and R&B. These two are sure to get you on your feet.
