New Christmas Pageant Kicks off In Echo Park

The Elysian Park amphitheater in Solano Canyon hosts three nights of pastorela, a centuries-old Mexican tradition.

Elysian Park is coming alive with holiday wonder this weekend thanks to the Los Angeles Theater Academy.

The locally based group offers drama classes to kids and adults in both English and Spanish.

Now it's drawing on that special expertise to bring Navidad en El Parque to Elysian Park for the first time.

The two remaining performances of this holiday pastorela or passion play are on Saturday, Dec. 22 and Sunday, Dec. 23.

Vital to Mexican Catholic tradition, pastorelas recreate the supposed journey of the Three Kings to visit the Christ Child.

Like this one at Solano Canyon, they are usually staged outside and are a chance for the entire family and, often, animals to play out this important passion play with music and dance.

The Los Angeles Theater Academy Production continues through Sunday, with performances today and tomorrow at 4 p.m.  The City of Los Angeles Parks and Recreation is cosponsor.

WHERE: 929 Academy Road, Elysian Park

COST: $15, suggested donation for adults

          $7.50, for children

          Chidlren under 5 free.
