The opera Crescent City is set during a mythical flood that evokes Katrina. With a cast of 15 and an 18-member orchestra, the scale is grand.
Early reviews are in, and the Los Angeles Times is already declaring the piece a framebraker, and director Yuval Sharon a bit of a visionary.
The production continues with shows Saturday and Sunday and then Thursdays through Sundays until May 27. All shows are at 8 p.m.
But Friday night, performers and producers take a break, and let the visual artists steal the show.
They'll host an open house and artists' talk to showcase the set itself--a collaboration among six of them--Friday night from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The featured Los Angeles artists are: Mason Cooley, Brianna Gorton, Katie Grinnan, Alice Könitz, Jeff Kopp, and Olga Koumoundouros.
Atwater Crossing is located at 3245 Casitas Ave Los Angeles CA 90039.
If you can't make it Friday, the sets will also be on display on Wednesday and Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m. until the opera closes.
The video above is also a good introduction to the work.
