Five Things: With Ben Kramer

We kick off Echo Sounds' new, recurring feature with local music freak, Ben Kramer.

Tentatively titled "Five Things," this entry marks the first of a recurring series on Echo Sounds. It features a man-on-the-street approach to what's happening in the neighborhood by and for residents. We're kicking the series off with a friend of mine, Ben Kramer.

An New York City transplant, you might know this gentlemen through his former roles at FYF Fest or as a one-third partner of Autumn Tone Records. Or maybe you've seen him haunting local shows and events in one of his many, ubiquitous ballcaps.

Kramer's Five Things follow, in his own words.

Restaurant: - Almost like American tapas, their plates are generous and delicious, great for big groups or just two. With a fine selection of stiff, well-made drinks (like their jalapeno margarita), there's not much more you can ask for.

Bar: - One of the areas latest additions and certainly its most welcomed by me, they serve up a huge variety of whiskies and bourbons, while also throwing together great classic cocktails like their version of The Old Fashioned and Dark & Stormy. The dark, well designed and decorated setting and horseshoe bar give it the feel of a landmark institution.

Java: Fix Coffee - Nestled in the hills, it's a mini-oasis with great coffee, for those who don't want the line and don't feel the hype of Intelligentsia. Traffic is light in the area so their outdoor seating is a blissful and relaxing area for those who wish to sip their coffee rather than chug it on the go.

Club: While the Eastside lacks the gorgeous and spacious venues that dot much of L.A., Monday nights rule supreme as almost every venue opens their doors for residencies. (Local acts play every Monday of the month inviting three other bands to join them each time.) It's a great opportunity to catch a rising act, plus get a sneak peek at who's up-and-coming. And you never know when a big name act will do a surprise set. It's always free.

Store: - Rarely can you put your musical selections so easily in the hands of someone else, but the best thing to do when walking into their compact, shoulder-to-shoulder shop is ask the owner, Neil, or one of his fine associates, what's new and good. Their selection is fantastic, and their love and support of local acts on vinyl is refreshing.
