Five Things: Amanda Ornelas

This week we catch up with music PR wiz Amanda Ornelas as she runs down some of her eastside favorites.

In addition to running PR for New West Records, longtime Echo Park resident Amanda Ornelas has long been my guide to must-visit destinations. In a rare instance, she presently is not criss-crossing the country taking care of her artists. As such I ask her to run down some of her all-time favorite locales. We bring you Amanda's picks, in her own words, below.

Best indie bookstore in the area.  Great selection of books beyond just best sellers, great place for gifts and they’ll buy your used books as well!  Really helpful staff and bonus you can get coffee from the café in the back while you browse.

Barbrix (Silver Lake): My go-to restaurant for a glass (or 3) of wine with appetizers after work, a romantic dinner or a night out with family and friends.  They have an extensive wine selection, with reasonable prices, and Chef Don’s menu is beyond delicious…not only will he show you what he's doing if you land a seat at the bar next to the grill, but he also offers cooking classes.  They also never do price-fixed menus on holidays, which is a big bonus.

El Tres (Los Feliz): Hidden away above El Chavo is an incredible boutique hotel.   There are only 3 suites available, so reserve well in advance of your trip.   Each suite has a kitchen, living room, bedroom and media rooms complete with turntables and vinyl.  As a bonus El Chavito is conveniently downstairs where there is often a DJ and always good tequila!

Perfect neighborhood bar. Always free to get in. Awesome DJs and eclectic jukebox.  Dance floor, pool table, beer specials before dodger games. Oh and there is a photo booth, pinball and old school video games!

Matrushka (Silver Lake): My favorite boutique to shop at.  Laura Howe finds amazing fabrics then hand makes unique pieces right in Silverlake. The designs are super flattering and if it’s not perfect she’ll tailor your purchase on site.
