Slake 3rd Issue Release Party

Slake: Los Angeles editors Joe Donnelly and Laurie Ochoa are marking the release of their third issue, “War and Peace,” with a music-filled celebration at L.A.’s burgeoning creative complex Atwater Crossing. The party begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 26.

The celebrations for Slake Nos. 1 and 2 were watershed events for L.A.’s literary community, providing the kind of dynamic revelry for writers, artists, and readers normally reserved for other members of the city’s media landscape.

Slake’s Issue 3 celebration will be no different. Visitors to Atwater Crossing can expect:

  • Live music by Old Californio and the local collective Ojo
  • Flatbread samples and complimentary wine from the new restaurant Atwater Crossing Wood Fire Kitchen, plus more menu items available for purchase
  • Original art on display from Slake No. 3 contributors, including Sandow Birk, Ingrid Allen, Gregory Bojorquez, Michael Dopp, Deedee Cheriel, Shannon Donnelly, and John Tottenham
  • A party lounge outfitted by Living Room
  • Fried chicken from LudoTruck and hot dogs from Let’s Be Frank
  • Complimentary locally roasted coffee from Handsome Coffee Roasters
  • Stacks and stacks of Slake No. 3 for sale (or free with tote bag for those who purchase $25 advance tickets)
  • Pie!

The “War and Peace” issue weaves together narrative journalism, fiction, poetry, photography, and original art to examine internal and external conflicts from the perspectives of soldiers, survivors, bounty hunters, tweakers, surfers, and more. Some of the contributors, Angelenos all, include novelist and journalist Ben Ehrenreich (The Suitors, the forthcoming Ether), political writer Marc Cooper (The Nation, Pinochet and Me: A Chilean Anti-Memoir), Jerry Stahl (I, Fatty; Pain Killers and the forthcoming collection Bad Sex on Speed), Patrick deWitt (The Sisters Brothers, co-writer of the film Terri), Natasha Vargas-Cooper (The Atlantic, Mad Men Unbuttoned), James Greer (Artificial Light, The Failure), poet and food editor Amy Scattergood, artist Sandow Birk with his first published fiction, and Joseph Mattson (Eat Hell, Empty the Sun).
