Silver Lake Neighborhood Council Seeks Web Manager

The council questioned candidates on Wednesday night.

The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council met on Wednesday August 17, 2011 to discuss their web site. Although the council already has an online presence it is not always updated or maintained in a timely fashion to reflect the council’s many activities. See the Council's website here.

WEB MAINTENANCE NEEDED

A little over a dozen people gathered in a meeting room at the Citibank on Glendale Boulevard and Silver Lake Boulevard to discuss hiring professionals to maintain the site. Member Clint Lukens said he intended to keep the meeting “short and sweet.”

Two different businesses presented their credentials and proposals to the council. However, there was not a quorum of voting members present so a final decision could not be made.

Lukens said the goal was “to find a maintenance person” to update the site, rather than overhaul or redesign it completely.

SEGOVIA AND SOUZA MA

Local residents Segovia Smith and Christina Souza Ma presented themselves first. This team builds web sites at their home-based office and has been doing so since 1996.

These self-described workaholics fielded questions about their billing rates, credentials and willingness to work outside the standard 9 to 5 paradigm to make updates. Souza Ma said the current system is “really dinosaur,” including asking for interested parties to sign up for email on a piece of paper. Smith proposed instead using an iPad application to let people directly input their information to the mailing list.

ENCI BOX

The second presentation came from Enci Box, who described herself as “a web site designer and photographer.” She offered site maintenance as well as updating a social media presence for the council, including Twitter.

Box would also “show you best practices” for council members to update the site themselves. When asked about her other work activities, Box admitted “I’m really cutting down” to focus on having a family instead.

AN ONGOING DEBATE

Lukens wrapped up the question and answer segment by admitting that the council needs “to discuss the flow of information, logistically” in submitting updates to whomever is selected.

Treasurer Anthony Crump said that his first meeting with the council, some two years ago, related to web site issues. “We need to make this happen,” agreed committee member Scott Crawford. The candidates for the web site maintenance position were implored to return for the next meeting on September 7, 2011 at Micheltorena Elementary to present themselves to the full voting committee.
