Reading Activities Aim to Keep Echo Park Kids Busy this Summer

The summer reading program is designed for children and teenagers.

The Echo Park Branch Library wants to help children keep up their reading skills this summer through the library's reading program.

Activities under the theme, "Reading is so delicious," will be offered for two age groups: children who are 11 and younger and teens ages 12 to 18, according to Children's Librarian Vinh Luc.

"It keeps a lot of them busy because a lot of kids once they get out of school those three months, they just stop reading," Luc said. "This gives them an opportunity to come in and get better with their skills."

The children's events, which kick off on June 12, will include a magic show as well as "Wild Things and Animals of Prey," an animal show presented by the organization, Full Spectrum, according to Luc. The activities will be held every Wednesday through Aug. 17.

Activities for the teenagers will include a workshop designed to teach kids about what it means to be vegan, a "Yoga and Yoghurt" class and another entitled "Duct Tape Creations," according to Luc. Those activities begin on June 14 and will, subsequently, be held on most Tuesdays this summer.
