Community Corner

Mayberry Elementary and Wildwoods Team Up to Create Mural

Echo Park's own Wildwoods Foundation provides community service programs for youth. The 2nd Annual Wildwoods Wine Tasting will benefit the foundation at Silver Lake Wine on August 18.

At Echo Park's , students, teachers, and administrators wanted to raise community awareness and clean up the graffiti that had stained the walls.

The goal was to beautify the school and take back the walls which had been defaced.

Patch spoke with Dwain Wilson, Executive Director of the Wildwoods Foundation, about the mission of the mural project as an example of their work and the group's 2nd Annual Wine tasting Fundraiser on August 18.

PATCH: Can you tell us how the Mural Project came to be and how long it took the children and teachers to accomplish?

Wilson: The mural was the culminating service project component of our Full Circle program at Mayberry Elementary School.  Full Circle is an 8-week program for 5th and 6th grade classes that helps students understand the principles of ecology, interdependence, diversity and sustainability.

For this year’s project, students at Mayberry were inspired to design and create a mural to cover the tagging (graffiti) to which the southeast corner of their campus fell frequent victim. The students of Ms. Park and Mr. Negroe’s fifth grade class worked in teams to design different sections of the mural over a period of weeks and painted the mural in one day on Saturday, May 19.

PATCH: This is the 2nd Annual Wine Tasting Fundraiser for Wildwoods, what are the highlights this year?

Wilson: There will be many surprises this year. One thing I can say, we’ll have a silent auction featuring products and services from local merchants and that’s shaping up to be a real showcase of the range of businesses in the Silver Lake, Echo Park area. The best thing about the wine tasting is that Silver Lake Wine makes it so easy.

PATCH: What other local programs does Wildwoods provide?

Wilson: While Echo Park, Silver Lake is our home and the focus of the majority of our energy and resources, in addition to Full Circle, we provide three other programs that serve schools from across the greater Los Angeles region:

Eco-X: An urban ecology program for grades 4 – 6.

A Drop in the Bucket: A water education program for grades 4 – 6 conducted at the Vista Hermosa Natural Park.

Oakgrove:  A student-led human relations program at Venice High School that dates back forty years.

The 2nd Annual Wildwoods Wine Tasting to benefit the Wildwoods Foundation at Silver Lake Wine is on Saturday, August 18 from 6:30 p.m - 9 p.m. Reserve tickets here.
