Griffith Park Trail Marathon Relay to Take Place on Saturday

The first annual event is drawing on the success of the past.

The first Griffith Park Trail Marathon Relay is planned for this weekend, and organizers are expecting big crowds.

Organizers looked to the past for inspiration for this first annual event, according to Race Director Dino Perez.

“It was reminiscent of the old Jimmy Stewart relay,” Perez said. “It was a really big event.”

This weekend’s relay race is getting off to its own good start, according to Perez.

“My hope and my dream, with the backing of the Runner’s Circle, was to kind of revive it and bring it back up,” Perez said.

The event, which is scheduled for Saturday, June 22, should be an “awesome race,” and there is still room for a few more teams to sign up, according to Perez.

Each team consists of five runners, and each runner will run about 5.25 miles, Perez said. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own tents, and food to enjoy together once the race is over.

The cost is $40 per person to sign up. The race will also be used as a fundraiser to give back to the park rangers who do so much for Griffith Park, Perez said.

The Griffith Park Relay will take place on the east side of the Old Zoo in Griffith Park.
