Echo Park Chevron Agrees to Light Pollution Fix for Neighbors

The new Echo Park Chevron agrees to a compromise following light pollution complaints from neighbors.

After hearing complaints from neighbors about light pollution caused from the new Echo Park Chevron station Echo Park and Morton Avenues, Councilman Mitch O'Farrell's office said they were able to reach a compromise with the station's owners to help fix the issue.

At Tuesday night's Echo Park Neighborhood Council meeting, O'Farrell's field deputy, Adam Bass, announced that the councilman talked with Chevron owners and had them agree to turn off the lights of their main sign sometime between 9 and 9:30 p.m.

"They will turn it off for the night sometime in that window... We hope that it will help," Bass said. "It was a mom and pop sort of gas station for a long time so now that it is open 24 hours, the Councilman reached out and just asked that they be good neighbors.”

Bass said that turning off the main sign each night should reduce some of the light pollution coming from the business.

In October, The Eastsider LA reported that some residents that lived near the gas station complained of its bright glow in an otherwise dark neighborhood. One resident said the lights were "nasty, bright, fluorescent, obnoxious."

Bass said O'Farrell's office will continue to monitor the light situation at the gas station.
