Black Hogg Restaurant Now Open For Lunch

Editors Note: Sometimes you see something cool that you just have to share. This column is my opportunity to share with you the interesting businesses I'm visiting and people I'm meeting.

Silver Lake's own Black Hogg restaurant began opening for lunch Tuesday. I heard about it so I went in to check it out. They serve sandwiches with Italian style meats and cheeses. What could be better than that? 

So here's my story: They are open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., close for three hours and open up again for dinner from 6 to 10:30 p.m. (and are open Tuesdays through Saturdays). Not knowing this, I showed up at 3:07 p.m. Without knowing who I was, they let me in and offered to make me a sandwich even though they were closed. Off to a great start, right? I ask the chef to surprise me with a sandwich (I got an Italian Meats sandwich with Molinari Sopresseta, Beretta Hot Coppa, San Daniele Mortadella, Provalone, Piccante DOP, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Aged Balsamic, Mayo, Artichokes, Red Onion and Wild Arugula. While I'm waiting for my sandwich, I begin to talk with one of the owners, Jonathan Kim. I identify myself and we start talking about the restaurant. They opened in March 2012 for dinner only and began making lunch this week. Their dinner menu includes bite-sized bacon morsels, so I definitely think I'm going back to try that. 

Since they had closed already and opened up just for me, I took my lunch to Echo Park Lake to eat. Tuesday was a beautiful day with the sun shining and plenty of people out paddle boating, so I was incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to sit outside. Let me tell you, the food was delicious. Having grown up on Italian subs, I am no stranger to what makes a sub good or what makes it bad. This was amazing.

Overall this was a great experience. The food was delicious, the restaurant staff was really nice and while it's open weird hours, it is easy to get to and comfortable once you there.  For more information on Black Hogg you can visit their website.
