10,310 Teens, Young Adults Land Summer Jobs in L.A.'s Youth Initiative

The goal of the program was to hire 10,000 young people aged 14 to 24 for summer jobs, offering them work experience and keeping them focused during months when many are not busy with school.

As of today, 10,310 teens and young adults have snagged summer jobs as part of his Hire L.A.'s Youth initiative, Mayor Eric Garcetti said today.

He made the announcement at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, which hired 30 young people.

"I'm proud to announce that yesterday was the first day of work for 10,000 young Angelenos" taking part in the program, Garcetti said.

The goal was to hire 10,000 young people aged 14 to 24 for summer jobs, offering them work experience and keeping them focused during months when many are not busy with school.

More than 100 employers from the public and private sector ended up hiring young people who will earn $9 an hour and work 120 hours this summer, according to the mayor's office.

The youth jobs program is part of the mayor's three-part Summer of Success initiative, which also includes Summer of Learning, a series of educational activities taking place online and around the city, and the Summer Night Lights program, which extends park hours and offers recreational activities.
