Blog: The Smear Campaign Against Jimmy Gomez

Community leaders and organizations respond to Luis Lopez.

We are just 8 days away from the November 6 election and like you I am getting hammered by campaign mail and calls. Usually candidates send you mailers to inform you, the voters, about what they plan to accomplish if you vote for them. Jimmy Gomez has been doing just that and that is why he earned my family's vote. However, his opponent decided it was a good idea to photo-shop a picture of Jimmy for one of his mailers and send them to voters hoping we wouldn't fact-check his very nasty mailer. Well we did and so did other voters and I wrote about it here.

Well since then, voters have reacted with disgust at what seems to be the smear campaign against Jimmy by the Luis Lopez campaign. Sandra Figueroa-Villa, Executive Director of El Centro Del Pueblo* and a former Arturo Chavez supporter was just as upset as I was and had this to say:

I wholeheartedly endorse Jimmy Gomez. Every day, I deal with the realities of gun violence and it is not an issue to be taken lightly. We need leaders in Sacramento that will keep guns off the street. I am confident Jimmy Gomez will be our champion, ...

However, today was the most important day to bring to light Luis Lopez' lies about Jimmy Gomez. The Brady Campaign is devoted to creating an America free from gun violence, where all Americans are safe at home, at school, at work, and in our communities. The California Chapter of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence released the following statement from their President, Dan Gross:

Gun violence is a matter of life and death and it should not be cheapened by underhanded political tactics. The accusations by Luis Lopez against Jimmy Gomez about his ties to the NRA are ridiculous and misleading.  If elected, Jimmy Gomez will stand up for victims of gun violence and he will support strong gun laws to reduce gun deaths and injuries in California.

You may say that I have a favorable point of view because I strongly support Jimmy Gomez and that is a fair comment. However, this morning the CA National Organization for Women who endorsed Luis Lopez for Assembly has entered the fray calling Luis Lopez' mailings "inaccurate" and their President had this to say:

“California NOW is proud of the fact that our endorsement is viewed by women in this state as the “Seal of Approval” for a candidate or an issue. We do not take that responsibility lightly. In fact, we work every single day to ensure that our logo is used only in an honest manner when it comes to educating and informing women on issues and candidates we support. That is why I was personally disappointed to learn that a candidate our PAC endorsed (Luis Lopez) chose to send out a misleading mailer that included our logo. Although the mailer did not quote NOW with the inaccurate statements portrayed on the piece, the use of our logo clearly implies that we signed off on the mailer – which we did not. I contacted the campaign to express my dissatisfaction and instructed them to remove our logo from future mailings.” -Patty Bellasalma, President, CA NOW

I worked with Patty to help elect great leaders like Assemblymember Holly J. Mitchell, (who has endorsed Jimmy Gomez) who embody the true meaning of being a progressive candidate. Luis Lopez has yet to tell this District what his plan to bring jobs to this District and all we have heard from him and his cohorts is "I'm the Homegrown candidate." Well my friend's grandmother has lived in this District for 35+ years but does that automatically entitle you to an Assembly District? This district cares about which candidate is going to bring good paying jobs, fund our public schools and who is going to stand up to special interests.

Jimmy Gomez is the only candidate with a plan to bring jobs to our District and just today I received a mailer from him! Here is his plan:

  • Jimmy will invest in our infrastructure. Our schools, roads and other infrastructures are crumbling - and making it more difficult for California to bounce back from the economic crisis. We need to rebuild our state, and create good-paying jobs in the process.
  • Restore funding to our schools. Our schools have taken the brunt of over $20 billion in state budget cuts over the years. Our schools and colleges are job creators. Jimmy will fight to restore funding to our schools, universities and community colleges.
  • Close the loopholes that encourage businesses to ship jobs out of California. Our tax code is riddled with special interest loopholes that lose California jobs and let the wealthy and corporations duck paying their fair share. Jimmy will stand up to these special interests and slam those loopholes shut, generating revenue and bringing jobs to AD 51.

Instead of joining a negative campaign and dressing up in silly costumes when Halloween has not even arrived yet - why not join the Gomez campaign? Jimmy wants to get California working again with his plan to bring jobs to this District. I hope you can join me and my family in voting for an experienced leader who will be ready on Day 1 to get the resources this District so desperately needs.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Jimmy Gomez is the one sending out negative (and false) campaign fliers against Luis Lopez. (As a longtime resident of Riverside County, how could he talk about the issues? He's only lived in LA for a year so he knows nothing about the issues impoacting residents here.) What Jimmy Gomez has not done is explain the perjury regarding his voting residency that the Public Integrity Division of the LA County District Attorney's Office is looking into - unfortunately, as in the recent case of City Council member Richard Alarcon, it will inot be resolved before Nov. 6th. The last thing the voters of this disrtict need is a carpetbagger distracted by felony charges. http://eaglerock.patch.com/blog_posts/blog-is-assembly-candidate-jimmy-gomez-the-man-with-two-places
Peter Choi October 29, 2012 at 11:54 PM
Instead, carpetbagger Jimmy Gomez sent out his political consultant Mike Shimpock to claim he had used an old checkbook - an explanation that was met with widespread derision & incredulity and spurred a flurry of behind-the-scenes emails criticzing Shimpock for his epic fail. http://eaglerock.patch.com/blog_posts/blog-jimmy-gomez-plays-the-victim-card

Patch readers, rather than listen to me or Mr. Ruiz, here is an objective report on Jimmy Gomez' imploding campaign by LA's top political blog Mayor Sam's Sister City: http://mayorsam.blogspot.com/2012/10/a-message-on-nras-favorite-pac.html

I saved the best for last, here is a video of Jimmy Gomezx attempting to explain his residency: http://youtu.be/uyEBvnXgCIc

Thanks for spamming the comment section. Instead, you should be helping the Lopez sinking ship by doing something for his campaign. When organizations denounce the campaign they've endorsed that means the campaign is not going well.
Peter Choi October 30, 2012 at 12:46 AM
You're welcome. It's called fact checking. Something your misleading blog desperately needed ("experienced leader"? Gomez has never held a leadership position in his life unlike Luis Lopez who led the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council and also served this community on the Parks Funding Oversight Committee AND as President of LA’s East Area Planning Commission. Now THAT is an experienced leader! Snap! LUIS LOPEZ 2012!!!)
Tom Mertz October 30, 2012 at 12:53 AM
Big deal. So they should have left the NOW logo off the mailer. As Ms. Bellasalma said, the mailer did not claim they were quoting NOW. I am sure the campaign apologized and has reprimanded the overeager graphic designer.
Ari Ruiz October 30, 2012 at 01:03 AM
@tom: Is not only about the logo, its about Lopez misleading the voters and lying to them! "... That is why I was personally disappointed to learn that a candidate our PAC endorsed (Luis Lopez) chose to send out a misleading mailer that included our logo." -Patty Bellasma

Team Choi on this one. As a longtime NELA resident, I say "LUIS LOPEZ 2012!"
Mark October 30, 2012 at 04:12 AM
Wow, I guess the local politicos are concerned about the taint of loser-dom surrounding the Gomez campaign seeping into their own campaign. Hey, when you lay down with dogs you get fleas. Shoulda backed the local guy with a record of local leadership Luis Lopez!
Mark October 30, 2012 at 04:13 AM
This numbnuts Gomez can not even give a clear answer to his residency. "I move around..." WTF? The LA County DA is gonna have a field day with Jimmy Gomez' voter fraud perjury charges.
Mark October 30, 2012 at 04:21 AM
Please tell us where in his career Jimmy Gomez has ever shown leadership - besides using his position as a Political Director fo the Nurses Union to funnel money to groups that funneled it right back to his campaign? <-- from the LA Weekly.
Mark October 30, 2012 at 04:27 AM
#Ari... how about you follow basic Patch etiquette and actually answer the above comments instead of slamming them? P.S. "spamming" is sending the same message to numerous emails, not posting comments. Is your i.q. an example of what voters will get if they vote Jimmy Gomez?
Tom Mertz October 30, 2012 at 04:43 AM
The issue is that Jimmy has not been forthright about his residency nor his contributions from the NRA and polar bear hunting lobby. The only information in the "smear campaign" has been gleaned from easily accessible public campaign filings, none of it denied by Gomez as far as I have seen. In addition to being the the hard-working local candidate with proven results for the district, Luis is running a kickass campaign. He would be a fool to let these golden opportunities go by. If Jimmy won't tell us what he's really all about, the Lopez campaign will. That's politics.

So looks like thay have a choice between Dumb & Dumber
Eastsider Rider October 30, 2012 at 05:48 PM
Peter Choi sounds like their shady sidekick.

Jimmy is part of the new Democratic version of Grover Norquist style politics. You sign an oath to the unions, the way Republican/Tea Partiers signed an oath to never raise taxes in order to maintain, or get elected to a senate/congressional seat. Then you have the full monetary force of the party behind you. You can't lose. This is what you have in Gomez as a candidate. Until we demand that money from corps. and unions be taken out of government, we will continue to be saps, represented by bought and paid for poly-ticians like Jimmy Gomez.
Culturevator October 30, 2012 at 09:00 PM
PS: Luis Lopez is no prize either. He is the lesser of 2 evils.
Tom Mertz October 31, 2012 at 12:10 AM
I'm gung ho for Luis. I've known him for nearly 10 years and have seen how hard he's worked for the district. He's also very smart and just a regular guy from the community. I have no doubt he will do a great job for us.
Nick November 01, 2012 at 11:38 PM
Can you tell us again how Lopez saved the polar bears? It brightens my day, kinda like when Romney said he had a binder full of women to choose from.
Nick November 02, 2012 at 12:01 AM
I dunno, who would you rather have, a union guy or an ineffective lob who couldn't even get his own party to endorse him? Seriously, what's Lopez gonna do in Sacto, whine them to his cause? If all politicians are evil, I'd rather be on the side of the guy who knows how to advocate for workers and our families. Besides how can you trust a guy (Lopez) who puts out mailers that imply that NOW and the CA Democratic Party endorse him when they clearly do not? If that's his best face, I'd hate to see him when the real pressure is on.
Tom Mertz November 02, 2012 at 12:10 AM
Luis has always been a strong advocate for animals. If all he did for polar was to call attention to Gomez taking money from their hunting lobby, I'd call that a great service.
Nick November 02, 2012 at 08:49 PM
They're both working to earn their office, however, one is just more able to make things happen. Gomez, when working for the nurses union, advocated successfully for them. Yes, it's true, the nurses union was his employer, but you have to consider who makes up the union--nurses. In other words, hard working people, and these people trust him.
Peter Choi November 03, 2012 at 09:01 PM
Thanks Mark! :) It is telling that Luis Lopez has the support of long time Patch readers while most of the pro-Gomez comments come from "new" anonymous commenters who have signed on with the sole purpose of spreading misinformation. I'm disappointed that Ari Ruiz, the author if this hit piece, has not bothered to reply to any of the comments below. (Voters, this is an example of how responsive Jimmy Gomez will be once elected.)
Tom Mertz November 04, 2012 at 09:31 PM
Gomez knows how to allocate money from his employer to candidates. All they have to do in return is endorse him. Call me old-fashioned but I think a candidate needs to earn his or her office, like Luis has, not buy it as Gomez is trying to do.
