The 34rd Annual Southern California Spring Garden Show takes place April 25-28 at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. The four-day show on three levels of the west wing of South Coast Plaza centers around a dramatic 25-foot-high floral creation with whimsical depictions of sea life on a coral reef, all made with flowers, seeds, and other natural materials.
Eight stylish and sustainable outdoor living vignettes are waiting to be discovered on level one of the Crate &amp; Barrel/Macy’s Home Store wing. Created by Southern California’s top design experts collaborating with South Coast Plaza home stores, the water-wise designs offer inspiration for gardens and outdoor spaces.
Levels two and three of the show will feature 35 specialty vendors with unique and collectible plants for sale at pop-up booths and boutiques, as well as nonprofits and horticultural organizations offering advice, insights and information.
Just across the Bridge of Gardens in South Coast Plaza's luxurious Jewel Court wing, Fleurs de Villes ARTISTE features elaborately decorated mannequins and spectacular installations&nbsp;created by local floral artists. Surrounded by boutiques from the world’s most exclusive brands, Fleurs de Villes celebrates the women&nbsp;artists, from contemporary visionaries and trailblazers, to world masters from throughout history.

Saturday May 4th 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. PT We are excited to present Calico Winds for our next Edendale Up Close Concert. Eileen Holt (flute) Catherine Del Russo (oboe) Kathryn Nevin (clarinet) Theresa Treuenfels (bassoon) and Rachel Berry (horn) will perform the joyful single movement Wind Quintet by Manny Mendelson, followed by Robert Muczynski's edgy and animated Quintet for Winds. The program will culminate with a world premiere performance of Jeremy Gilien's Woodwind Quintet; its three movements are descriptively entitled Melodica, Meditation and Merrymaking.: Playing around with a melodica (a small keyboard played by blowing air through a mouthpiece) provided the initial inspiration for this piece, although for years I had wanted to write something for this versatile combination of instruments which is so capable of producing the most kaleidoscopic colors. The first movement, Melodica, begins with a jaunty theme in B flat major leading to a pastoral passage in the Dorian mode. The rustic mood continues into F and D major, spinning off into a central section which includes some Baroque procedures, including fugue, canon, and even a French Overture. The original theme reprises, and unfolds freely with syncopated rhythms, and virtuosic filigree in the flute and clarinet. The movement ends with further manipulation of the theme and a short coda. The second movement, Meditation, set in slow 6/8 time, maintains a serene mood throughout, employing occasional mild dissonance with chromatic harmonies. It serves as an extended interlude to the more extroverted outer movements. In the finale, Merrymaking, dance-like rhythms abound in an exuberant, modified rondo form beginning in 7/8 time, but then frequently changing meters. My goal was to write a piece which would hold immediate appeal for a general audience, while remaining enjoyable yet challenging for musicians. I hope I have accomplished that! Join us for Voices from the Hill, a performance lifting up the stories and sounds of an unprotected greenspace in East Los Angeles called Elephant Hill. The event leads visitors through wild and distressed sections of the hillside, and culminates in a regenerated area, highlighting a vision for the future in which a protected Elephant Hill becomes a welcoming place for humans, birds and other wildlife to coexist.
Following a meandering path across the hillside, visitors will be invited to consider their connections to place, nature, and each other. Six stopping points will showcase song, percussion, and visual art, tying together the narrative themes of the performance: Heed the Call, Struggle, Devastation, Crossroads, Contemplation, and Regeneration. Performers stationed along the path will share music written by Guillermo Brown, with libretto written by LA Poet Laureate Luis Rodriguez. Interactive installations by Raul Baltazar and Maria Maea which incorporate natural materials from the hill will serve as resting points along the way. Cresting the hill, a percussion ensemble will use instruments created from detritus collected from the site and surroundings to beckon visitors to the final regenerated space.
The event celebrates the importance of collaboration, whether between humans and nature or among ourselves, in safeguarding a healthy world for all.
Note: This event has uneven walking paths and, at times, steep climbs that may be difficult for some participants. Our May 18th event is designed for those with mobility limitations, and we hope you will be able to join us then.&nbsp;
