Proposed City Council Districts Reshape CD4 and Downtown

The Los Angeles Redistricting Commission released maps drawn to incorporate Los Angeles's demographic shifts.

As many expected the preliminary maps released Wednesday by the Los Angeles Redistricting Commission give council member Jose Huizar's District 14 much of downtown. Jan Perry's District 9 keeps only the Staples Center and L.A. Live.

Meantime, Ed Reyes's District 1, which also cuts through the northwest edge of downtown and includes parts of Echo Park, appears relatively unchanged at its southern edge. To the north and east, however, it would now incorporate Mount Washington.

Moving West, it appears that Eric Garcetti's District 13 will lose Silver Lake Boulevard down from the Reservoir.

It would instead go into Tom La Bonge's District 4, which will also slip west and into the San Fernando Valley.

LABONGE DISAPPOINTED

LaBonge said in a statement he was very disappointed with the draft and encouraged citizens to "make their voices heard" at upcoming meetings.

He noted that the map "fractures the community of Hollywood among three Council districts and dissolves the "historic core" of the district in the Miracle Mile, Larchmont Village, Windsor Square, Pan Pacific Park and Park La Brea."

Yusef Robb, press officer for CD 13's Eric Garcetti, said in an e-mail, ""This is just the start of a longer process. Our priority is to ensure the final boundaries fairly represent Angelenos and their communities of interest."

Community members now have five week for public comment and hearings on the maps, which won't be finalized until March 1.

The maps were drawn in 3 closed door sessions.

Many expect to know more about how the districts were crafted after the Los Angeles Redistricting Commission meeting Wednesday.
