Learning from the Ground Up: Tree Planting at King Middle School

Forget old school, it's all about green school--literally, when volunteers planted brand-new fruit trees at King Middle School. Photographer Gary Leonard was on the scene.

First the Micheltorena Street Elementary School gets a brand-new garden, now Thomas Starr King Middle School (4201 Fountain Ave.) gets some new fruit trees. Is the Los Angeles Unified School District going green? Or are neighborhood folk just taking things into their own hands? It seemed like a little bit of both when Los Angeles City Councilmember Tom LaBonge joined volunteers from Friends of King Middle School, TreePeople and Disney VoluntEARS to plant 26 fruit trees on the school's campus Friday. And that's not all that's going green: One hundred fruit tree saplings were given away to families and staff of the school. Now, let's just hope they don't forget to water!

Photographer Gary Leonard was there to catch the planting in all of its glory.

About this column: Longtime Echo Park resident and photographer Gary Leonard (of Take My Picture Gary Leonard fame), shares snapshots of the neighborhood.
