Kayser, Svonkin Lead As Computer Recount Winds Down

Observers are guessing that just under an hour remains, with only snags and provisional ballots remaining.

The final computer recount in the May 17 election was set to begin Thursday at 9 a.m.  It actually began in the afternoon, but most expect the final results to be available shortly.

With everything but the provisional and damaged ballots counted Bennett Kayser leads Luis Sanchez  10,440 to 9,738 in the race for the board seat in LAUSD district 5. Scott Svonkin leads Lydia Gutierrez 69,547 to 60,148 in the community college district 5 race.

All  ballots from both the LAUSD District 5 race and the community college race are being recounted. That includes he City Clerk's "unofficial tally" that gave Kayser the victory by 272 votes.

Community college district 5  overlaps part of LAUSD district 5, but is significantly larger and, therefore, represents the larger share of the previously uncounted votes.

We'll be following this through the evening for you and have more details as they become available.
