Board to Hear Appeal to Beer & Wine at Fix Jan. 11
An Echo Park resident filed the appeal Nov. 21, after an assistant L.A. zoning commissioner granted the coffee house a conditional use permit.
A hearing has been scheduled in the appeal against a zoning commissioner's decision to grant a conditional use permit to Fix Coffee to serve beer and wine.
Echo Park resident Sue Borden filed the appeal on Nov. 21.
Permit First Granted Nov. 10
Assistant Zoning Administrator Maya Zaitzevsky had granted the permit in a letter dated Nov. 10.
According to Planning Commission executive assistant Rhonda Ketay, the hearing will take place Jan. 11 at 4:30 p.m. at the Ramona Hall at 4580 N. Figueroa St. in Highland Park.
The five-member East Los Angeles Regional Planning Commission will hear 10-minute arguments from both Fix Coffee and the appellants.
See the Commission's members here.
The public will also have a chance to comment.
A denial of the appeal could come right after the meeting, but granting it will take some time and require the commission to generate a list of "findings."
The state must also grant Fix a license before alcohol can be served.
Many Surprised When Permit Granted
Many were surprised about the decision to grant the permit last month.
Local residents had argued that the site's geography, proximity to numerous schools and limited parking made it a poor choice for expanded hours and the consumption of beer and wine.
Proponents pointed to the need for a convenient local restaurant to serve neighbors in the evening hour and Fix's strong track record of working with the community.
We'll have more reaction from the parties involved. So check back here.
And in the meantime, take our poll:

This poll is poorly worded. Denying the appeal of course means letting the license stand.

Mixed development in community planning is so healthy and essential. Uniformity is always the bane of attractive and vital neighborhoods. Restaurants, cafes and bars can mix with schools, pre-schools,play areas in Paris,London,Barcelona,New York,San Francisco, etc., but for some strange reason not in Echo Park. Diversity helps people accept new and stimulating perspectives. All the above cities were and are made great by their acceptance and tailoring of different activities. It is social and planning progress. Echo Park's social evolution has come a long way since the early 1900's. It is amazing what people can accommodate for a livable and thoughtful environment. @Roger -- Interesting point. Anyone else want to chime in about the need for and viability of mixed use along upper Echo Park Avenue?
