Echo Park Elders and Caregivers Organize

Long-time Echo Park activist Ida Talalla convened the second meeting of a group of locals worried about a shrinking safety net.

"The gathering of elders and caregivers went well and leaves us inspired," wrote Ida Talalla in an email Tuesday.

Earlier that day, Talalla, a familiar face in the Echo Park community, had chaired a second meeting of people concerned about the future of seniors in the area.

The group first met on April 3. Several shared concerns about the slow dismantling of city and county services for the aging.

Others worried the changing demographics of the area--wealthier, younger--might leave seniors invisible.

At the second meeting Monday, Sister Alice Marie Quinn of the St. Vincent Meals on Wheels program visited.

According to Talalla, her program is being hit by budget cuts and needs donations. Some at Monday's meeting also suggested St. Vincent's explore accessing government voucher programs.

The Echo Park elders will meet again at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 16 at the .

Talalla says topics will include finding a space in the community for seniors to gather and the budget cuts threatened to LAUSD Adult Education.
